A rich “heritage”
Moved down Santa Rosa Street at 2 a.m.
Built around the turn of the century, the Inn was originally a single family residence for the early San Luis Obispo Herrera family. Manuel was the Constable, Isbaldo the custodian at the courthouse, and the oldest daughter, Juanita, worked for the Tribune Printing Company.
By the 1930s it had become a lodging home, a perfect use for its ten bedrooms. Known in its prime as the Bachelors Club, it housed young businessmen from Cal Poly and bank executives from the Bank of Italy — who, on formal occasions, would dress in tuxedos and proudly don purple ribbons announcing their membership.
In 1980 Rob and Kathy Strong bought it at a County auction, and the turn-of-century house — which would have been demolished if not moved — made one last trip. It found its new lot at 978 Olive Street — sold, as it happens, by another Herrera family.
